This type of baton features an internal mechanism that allows it to be closed by simply pressing a button and pushing the shafts into their stowed position. A more advanced option is a mechanical locking system, such as that found in ASP's talon batons. To close the baton, you have to strike the tip firmly and straight down against a hard surface, such as concrete, to break the friction of the tapers and collapse the sections. Traditional friction batons lock open by way of the tapers between the sections. But there are different systems that determine how the shafts lock into place and how they unlock for retracting. An effective, reliable baton requires a hard striking surface, secure grip, smooth operation, corrosion-resistance and of course, long-term durability.įrom a functional standpoint, all expandable batons are deployed by rapidly extending the arm, snapping the baton either upward or downward and extending the shafts by inertia. You want to look for batons made of high-strength materials such as 4140 steel and 7075 T6 aluminum - these are the same proven materials used in things like revolver cylinders, rifle receivers and aircraft parts. Modern, expandable baton is a precision-engineered tool that's a critical part of an officer's intermediate force options.Ī well-designed, high-quality expandable baton provides an optimal balance of striking power and compact carry on the belt or vest. Impact weapons have been around for as long as there have been law enforcement officers, but the technology has come a long way since the days when hickory sticks were state of the art.

*Potential participants should be aware that ASP programs are competency-based. If you would like to discuss training your agency, or have other questions, e-mail our Training Coordinator or call directly (800) 236-6243. These Trainers have demonstrated their ability through completion of a rigorous competency-based program involving knowledge of ASP technical data, performance skills and instruction of ASP classes. ASP Certified Trainers are highly skilled baton, restraint and flashlight instructors, authorized by Armament Systems and Procedures to conduct AIC Programs. This program trains individuals to conduct ASP Instruction Certification (AIC). Successful completion of the AIC Program certifies that the individual officer has met a competency-based standard of knowledge, has mastered performance skills, and has the ability to instruct ABC classes. AIC Training includes all information and techniques provided in the ABC Program, with the addition of ASP Instructional techniques. This advanced certification program is designed to acquaint participants with operational use of the ASP Tactical Baton, Tactical Restraints and Performance Flashlights and train them to conduct ASP Basic Certification (ABC) Programs. Thanks to their simplicity, ASP techniques are remembered and used on the street long after training ends. ASP techniques work on the street, not just in the ideal environment of a classroom or gym. Techniques are simple to learn, easy to understand, effortless to remember, and designed to work for all officers, not just those highly skilled in psychomotor performance. In addition to the direct company training that we provide, we support and endorse a number of independent training organizations and individuals who provide private instruction – typically fee-based – in the use of ASP products and tactics.ĪSP Integrated Training (Tactical Baton, Restraint and Performance Flashlight) puts no principle above simplicity. ASP training is so effective, and so respected, that it has been adopted by agencies in over 100 countries. You can read a few comments from past ASP training attendees here. We feel so strongly about the importance of proper training that we provide roughly $2 million worth of training each year to law enforcement at no cost.

ASP training focuses on clear, simple, repeatable and legally-defensible techniques and tactics, fine-tuned over decades of experience and real-world results. The word "Procedures" in our company name signifies our dedication to not only providing superior products, but also comprehensive training in their use.
